Update on Everest Trek for Rhinos

09/05/2012

We have reached Gorak Shep after some difficulty with the altitude on reaching Lobuche. Dante was not feeling great and it was a consideration to retrace our steps. He did though have the opportunity to meet one of his all time heroes Apa Sherpa who has completed 20 Everest summits. What a thrill for Dante!!!  Today we have reached Gorak shep at 5003 m and are within sight of Everest Base Camp and the incredible Khumbu ice fall.  All being good, we will reach our final destination of Everest Base Camp tomorrow.  Dante is now well acclimatized and doing well. He is getting a great deal of admiration on this trek.

Here are some pictures which were e-mailed through thanks to Danu Sherpa :)

Unite against Poaching flying high!

14h31 SA time... 03/05/2012.

We have just got to Dibuche, we have passed Tengboche and we will be sleeping here. The trek from Namche Bazar was very tough and now it is snowing heavily. We are not sure about what progress we will make tomorrow. We have had some amazing views of Everest and Amadablam. This place is amazing! Dante is doing very well so far. 2 May 2012.

Dante and Rene have reached Namche bazar and are spending a day or 2 there acclimatizing to the altitude.

The first day was a relatively easy trek to Phakding were they stayed overnight before and early start.  A very heavy trek saw our interepid rhino supporters reaching Namche bazar and their first tantalizing views of Everest.

While acclimatizing at the altitude of 3450 of Namche Bazar ( seen below), the opportunity is found for some stunning photos of the surroundings.

Dante and Rene Burdych have started their trek...

After landing in Katmandu they had some logistical planning to make and met up with Everest Basecamp trekking,  who endorsed the Unite against Poaching awareness campaign.

Some last minute shopping saw Dante in the streets of a bustling Katmandu where he pursuaded a local taxi to display the Unite against Poaching sticker on his carriage.

After the flight to Lukla, a pleasant day's trek saw them at Phakding with some lovely views of the mountains. Next stop is Namche.
